Drifting To The Rhythms At The Southeast Of Nowhere

In the work of Nguyễn + Transitory, we encounter a dynamic interplay of sound and movement that resists the sedimentation of tradition into mere repetition. Their work invokes the performative dimensions of traditional practices in Southeast Asia, where tradition persists not as a static remnant of the past, but as a living form, drifting to the rhythms at the Southeast of Nowhere—a space both locational and metaphorical, a site of dislocation and transformation. Here, traditional folk dance entwines with experimental electronic music, not as a juxtaposition but as a mutual mediation through which the
body becomes an archive, carrying histories rearticulated in each gesture and sound.
This reveals a deeper understanding of performance as a process of belonging and unbelonging, where bodies, histories, and spaces are constantly reconfigured. The body becomes a conduit through which compositions are generated in real-time, as touch becomes a mode of modulation—an act of becoming.
